When Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) was looking at prospective buyers of its home health and hospice segment, it was in a vulnerable position.

Its home health business had been “disappointing” at times, in the words of Brookdale President and CEO Cindy Baier. Occupancy in its senior living segment was falling during the COVID-19 crisis to record lows.

But now that HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA) — one of the biggest health systems in the U.S. — has agreed to acquire 80% of its home health and hospice business, the forecast is generally positive for Brookdale.

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether financial technology companies including Atlanta-based Kabbage Inc may have erred while distributing billions of dollars in pandemic aid to struggling small businesses, three people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The investigation, led by the Justice Department’s civil division, is examining whether Kabbage and other fintech companies miscalculated how much aid borrowers were entitled to from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) due to confusion over how to account for payroll taxes, the three people said.

GM expects to offer self-driving vehicles to consumers this decade

GM unveilied the Cadillac Personal Autonomous Vehicle concept during CES 2021 in January.


DETROIT – General Motors CEO Mary Barra expects the automaker to offer self-driving vehicles to consumers later this decade.

While autonomous vehicles for deliveries and ride-hailing services are currently undergoing rigorous testing, manufacturing them for retail customers hasn’t been a priority for automakers because the technology needed for the systems is prohibitively expensive.

“Later in the decade, I believe, and there’s a lot to still unfold, but I believe we’ll have personal autonomous vehicles,” she told investors Wednesday during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

(KNSI) – A St. Cloud business owner says the easing of COVID-19 restrictions is a move in the right direction.

Starting at noon on Friday, Minnesota is eliminating restrictions on outdoor dining and outdoor gatherings. Bar and restaurants can also stay open to their regular time.

Starting May 28, COVID restrictions on capacity limits for indoor events will be eliminated.
