IS A MAJOR DEVELOPMENT. ADAM: ONE OF THE MORE COMPLEX DEBATES THE STATE HOUSE SEEN WITH BOTH SIDES WANING THE MANTLE OF ANTIRACISM. THE REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED HOUSE ADOPTED LANGUAGE INTO THE STATE BUDGET FROM A HOTLY CONTESTED PIECE OF LEGISLATION, HOUSE BILL 544, TARGETING SO-CALLED DIVISIVE CONCEPTS. THE GOAL IS TO STOP THE STATE FROM DOING BUSINESS WITH CONTRACTORS WHO HAVE INCORPORATED TENANTS OF CRITICAL RACE THEORY INTO THEIR DIVERSITY TRAINING. WORKPLACE CONVERSATION THAT ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY, ACCORDING TO THE BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION. AND SOMETIMES, THOSE CONVERSATIONS INCLUDE UNCONSCIOUS BIAS, THEY INCLUDE DISCUSSIONS OF SYSTEMIC RACISM THAT MAY EXIST IN THE COUNTRY, AND THE FEELING WAS THAT THIS TYPE OF LANGUAGE STIFLES THAT TYPE OF DISCUSSION. ADAM: NOW, THE BIA ONCE THAT LANGUAGE OUT OF THE BUDGET. >> THE BIA CAN TAKE WHAT POSITION THEY WANT. MAYBE THEIR MEMBERSHIP SHOULD REACH OUT TO THEIR EXECUTIVE BOARD AND MAKE SURE THAT ORGANIZATION ISN’T GOIN ’WOKE.’ WE SEE CORPORATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY TRYING TO PRESSURE STATE LEGISLATURES INTO A CERTAIN POLITICAL AGENDA. ADAM: THE MOST STRIDENT CRITICS CALL THIS LEGISLATION RACIST, CONFOUNDING THE BILL’S SUPPORTERS, WHO SAY THEIR EFFORT IS AIMED AT STOPPING DISCRIMINATION. >> THEY ATTEMPT TO READ INTO THIS STATUTE THINGS THAT IT DOES NOT SAY. ADAM: BUT MANY PEOPLE OF COLOR AND NEW HAMPSHIRE BELIEVE THIS LANGUAGE IN THE BUDGET SEEKS TO OUTLAW DISCUSSION THAT IS ONLY JUST BEGINNING. THEY ARE INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THE STATE SENATE DOES WITH IT. WE LOVE NEW HAMPSHIRE AS A MINORITY, AS A WOMAN, AS SOMEONE WHO GREW UP HERE AND AS A BUSINESS OWNER.
